Operational Leadership Trainee Programme

Our Operational Leadership Trainee programme is aimed at people with a passion for food along with the ambition, initiative, motivation and drive to succeed in a faced paced food production business. Trainees should have obtained (or be expecting to obtain) a 2.2 degree by September 2020 OR a Higher Apprenticeship (level 5).

All our sites are located throughout the UK and this programme will involve working across multiple sites, therefore flexibility is key.

Across two years you will spend time in Production, Finance, Technical, HR, New Product Development and more across a number of our UK sites before progressing into a relevant role.

This programme is designed for ambitious individuals who aspire to be future Site Directors, Production Managers, Factory Managers, Projects Managers and more!

Getting started

You will begin your time with us by spending a full and engaging week on what we call our Farm to Fork experience, learning about our full supply chain, from pig production right through to a product ending up on retail shelves.

Rotations

You will experience eight rotations across the two years in areas such as Production, Finance, Technical, HR, Planning, Commercial, Engineering and more. This programme has a heavy focus on production and you will be spending an extensive amount of time in factory environments.

The OPEN programme

On day one you will be enrolled onto Discovery’s OPEN programme. This is a 12-15-month unique learning programme designed to improve your organisational performance, personal effectiveness, interpersonal excellence and behavioural impact. experience.

The OPEN programme involves residential workshops with other graduates and apprentices across the food industry and beyond.

At the end of the programme you will receive a diploma in Leadership and Management.

The application process is as follows:

  1. An initial application form that tells us a bit more about you and why you want to work for us

  6. Successful candidates will be made an offer by April 2020 with the view of starting in September 2020

How it works

A Supportive Environment

Undertaking an apprenticeship is hard work. Luckily, we will provide you with the right amount of support so you can thrive. Your manager and teams will be there for your day-to-day needs and you will be provided with a mentor who will guide you through various situations. All training providers will give you extensive support in completing your studies.

80% of your time will be spent at work: learning your job and picking up new skills.

20% of your time will be spent at college, mentoring sessions, job shadowing, other training and masterclasses.

Our Apprentice Programmes

Our Butchery Apprenticeship programme

The learning part of this programme is aimed at providing bespoke training to become a qualified butcher. Candidates will develop knife skills, understand yields, understand food safety and health and safety, identify features of carcases, and produce quality products to meet customer specification.

At the end of the programme you will have achieved the following qualifications as a minimum:

  • Technical Certificate [Includes elements from the FDQ Proficiency in Meat and Poultry qualification]
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English Level 1
  • QCF Level 2 Food safety Award
  • QCF Level 2 Health and Safety in the Food safety Chain
  • QCF Level 2 Knife Skills

After your apprenticeship you can progress your career through the ranks in butchery, working on fast-paced lines with other skilled butchers. We offer ongoing development opportunities for those individuals who are keen to progress and ambitious. Many of our previous apprentices are now Team Leaders and Managers.

Our Engineering Apprenticeship programme

The learning part of this programme is aimed at providing bespoke training to become a dual skilled Maintenance Engineer within five years. Candidates will develop skills to enable them to provide technical support in response to breakdowns on process systems, plant and equipment, including good fault finding techniques.

Our Engineering Apprenticeship programme is delivered by Birmingham Metropolitan College. You, along with the other Engineering Apprentices, will stay at the college three times a year, for six weeks at a time. We call this ‘block learning’. We pay for all accommodation and travel expenses to ensure you are comfortable as possible when away from home.

At the end of the programme you will have achieved the following skills and qualifications as a minimum:

  • Technical certificate [Basic Engineering Skill – Performing Engineering Operations (NVQ2 PEO units)
  • Level 3 in Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer [Example units – Maintenance pathway with modules of: =
  • Health and Safety, Engineering Principles and Practice, Principles of Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning]
  • Maintenance of machine systems, maintenance of hydraulic systems, maintenance of pneumatic systems, maintenance of electrical equipment and systems and Mechatronics systems principles and fault finding.
  • Engineering Knowledge and Competence (NVQ3)
  • Functional Skills in ICT Level

We offer ongoing development opportunities for those individuals who are keen to progress and ambitious. Your learning doesn’t stop when your apprenticeship ends.

Recently one of our Engineering Apprentices won the Food Processing Young Engineer of the Year Award.

Our Technical Apprenticeship programme

The learning part of this programme is aimed at providing bespoke technical training to be able to perform a vital role relating to the quality of our meat products and our food safety. Candidates will develop skills that will enable them to audit, analyse data, carry out visual checks on our products, as well as quality testing using equipment such as temperature probes and a taste panel.

At the end of the five-year programme successful candidates will have achieved a fully paid-for ‘Technical Professional’ degree from Harper Adams University.

You will cover a range of modules such as: Food Science, Nature of Food, Logistics, Food Defence and so much more.

We offer ongoing development opportunities for those individuals who are keen to progress and ambitious. Many of our apprentices are now Team Leaders or Managers and have gone on to complete even more qualifications.

The entry criteria for this programme is 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above.
